He Gave Our Pen Name to His Mistress

Chapter 13: Three Chapters in Quarantine

I could not undeliver a book that did not exist, but I could stop pretending Oliver’s outline was one.

At 08:50 on Tuesday, my solicitor projected an annotated working copy.

Its proposed correction schedule marked three old emails CREATOR APPROVAL.

Beside them sat the actual package: three chapters, one synopsis, and no ending, all still carrying Oliver’s COMPLETE MANUSCRIPT description.

Newspapers outside the glass wall asked whether I had killed Blackwater’s farewell.

My phone carried the quieter version: readers asking whether Inspector Vale survived the hotel, a question the uploaded pages never reached.

The index asked a more dangerous question because its blue labels could move work, money, and expectation faster than any headline.

Had marital shorthand become delivery consent?

My solicitor opened the first email.

The hotel setting could work. Keep exploring it.

I had sent those words eighteen months earlier after Oliver described a possible opening over dinner, while the idea still fitted between dinner plates.

“What did they approve that night?” she asked.

“A conversation.”

On her working copy, she dragged the email from CREATOR APPROVAL to DEVELOPMENT CONTEXT.

The label changed under my eyes.

I remembered Oliver grinning when I said hotel. That memory remained true; the blue approval label had stretched it into something larger.

Oliver’s bundled note remained attached, so the history stayed visible.

The second email read, We should discuss whether readers need one final visit.

His reply beneath it said, I will take that as yes.

I remembered leaving the table to answer a delivery call instead of correcting him.

“State what yes means now,” my solicitor said.

“A final-volume delivery requires a fresh instrument carrying both signatures.”

She entered the sentence in the current-consent field.

The second blue label turned amber: DISCUSSION ONLY, with the original exchange preserved beneath it in chronological order.

The third email thanked Oliver for testing a paragraph aloud.

Its date linked it to Book Six.

My solicitor moved it into EXISTING EDITION — PERFORMANCE CONTEXT.

Oliver’s genuine performance credit travelled with it.

The final-volume column cleared, leaving the three uploaded chapters to stand on their own content rather than borrowed sentences from our marriage.

My shoulders lowered for the first time that morning.

“One more choice,” she said, placing two versions of the withdrawal notice side by side.

The notice could close every future conversation or preserve a narrow route to resolve the shared option.

Fury wanted a slammed door.

Accuracy gave me a harder answer.

“Keep negotiation open for joint termination or another written resolution.”

She added the route beneath the cleared labels.

The notice preserved the old messages, their dates, and Oliver’s replies, then stated the present route in one affirmative sentence: fresh delivery authority required both creators’ signatures.

It also preserved the six existing books and their royalty schedules.

My separation letter, house, accounts, and property arrangements stayed in their own file.

At 09:17, I signed the updated consent statement with the same hand that had once typed keep exploring it across our kitchen table.

My solicitor sent it through North Quay’s delivery channel and to Oliver’s solicitor.

At 09:29, the North Quay administrator updated the official index.

Oliver’s response arrived through his solicitor a minute later: Grace is retreating from her own words. My solicitor attached it to the context column and kept working.

CREATOR APPROVAL disappeared from all three emails.

The package status became THREE CHAPTERS + SYNOPSIS — DELIVERY UNACCEPTED, and its promised ending vanished from the production summary.

Oliver could continue drafting under his own name and a clean route.

This package remained inside the frozen shared receiver.

The final-volume balance stayed pending a valid delivery decision.

Any supplier cancellation fee would travel through its own invoice review.

The newspapers still had their farewell headline.

I had a record that matched the pages actually uploaded, even if accuracy made a poorer newspaper headline than farewell.

The optional final volume remained parked indefinitely and carried no production slot.

Control stayed with the frozen joint route rather than passing automatically to Oliver, and North Quay requested a holding statement before noon.
